Thomas W. Fowler was born June 10th, 1951 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Thomas showed a proclivity for music and writing at an early age.
A classical violin student at age six, he began playing upright bass
in his grade school ensemble at age ten, and took up the bass guitar
at age fifteen.
After playing one year in the University of Utah stage band and
orchestra, Thomas moved to San Francisco where he recorded two albums
with Its a Beautiful Day. In 1973 he moved to Los Angeles and recorded
and toured with Frank Zappa. In 1975 he left The Mothers to play and
record two albums with Jean Luc Ponty . Beginning in the early seventies
Thomas and his four brothers formed and recorded The Fowler Brothers
Airpocket. Many of the members of that band are still together in Banned
from Utopia.
In 1993 Tom Fowler joined the Ray Charles Orchestra. In the spring of
1999 he began to notice a loss of feeling in his hands and body.
In June a non-malignant tumor was discovered and removed from his spinal
chord. Tom experienced an immediate and drastic improvement in dexterity.
During the six months before the operation Tom was forced to develop an
entirely new approach to warming in order to make it through the gigs.
These simple exercises appear to have therapeutic and practical value for
most musicians, not just bass players. It his wish to share his secrets
and improve musical performance worldwide.
